Do you have a work wife? I have a writing wife. ‘Wifey’, Amanda is my writing other half.
I can’t overstate how essential it is to have someone I can trust with my words, to share the joy of wins and the despair of rejections with, and to accompany me on bookish adventures, launches, research trips and other (nerdy) wordy activities. We met during COVID and have been learning and growing together as writers since. Her writing made me cry the day we met. We help each other, motivate each other, and occasionally lead each other astray.
Writing can be isolating, sitting with your thoughts and your laptop, in a room by yourself. I’m lucky to be a member of several excellent writing groups, with amazing people and enjoy deep connections with my writing friends. The writing/book community in Melbourne is incredibly supportive and inclusive, and I’m reminded of this at every book event.
But, I just wanted to pop in and send an extra big heartfelt burst of love to Wifey. Today she is taking over the care of a two week old baby for someone who can’t do it themselves at the moment. Add this to two teenagers, two dogs, a cat, eight chickens, a million bees, a broken hand, and a husband. She’s a super woman. Wifey, you’re generous, thoughtful, kind, and completely crazy. I love you.
