Author Talks

Going to ‘Author Talks’ is one of my favourite things about being a writer. Listening to someone describe their writing process, their road to publication story, and their trials and tribulations is always interesting, but also validating.

In the beginning, it feels like you’re playing dress-ups when you say ‘I’m a writer.’ Most people’s response is, ‘oh, what have you written?’ Of course, you have to admit, nothing yet, but it’s a work in progress. It feels duplicitous. But, listening to where other writers started and how they got their first break makes you feel like it’s possible.

Every writer I have seen speak about their books has been generous with their personal stories and open to answering questions. There is huge potential to learn from these encounters, and the events are often free. Many of these author talks are held in libraries and you just have to book in. I almost always end up buying the book, so it’s still a cheap night out, and you come home with a reward.

Sometimes these talks are held in bars. These occasions cost a small fee, but you do get a drink with your ticket. I find ‘Books in Bars’ events, run by my local Dymocks, are relaxed and fun. I try to attend as many as I can.

Some authors run writing workshops in local libraries or online. I’m always on the lookout for these. I’ve learned a lot from listening to other people talk about honing their craft and there are often excellent reading suggestions too.

Book launches are another excellent place to learn about how the author has written the book, where the idea came from, what they’re working on next, and the publishing experience.

Of course, all these events are also excellent places to meet with, and catch up with other writers, and readers. All these events are open to readers, and given they are who we’re writing for, listening to what interests them is invaluable.
