State Library of BRICKtoria

Regular readers, friends, and family, will know I am an enthusiastic fan of the State Library in Melbourne. As a teenager, I was often found ditching school to study in the hallowed Dome. Luckily, not often found out. Sorry Mum and Dad. I was quite sure I would be a successful autodidact, a self-learner, with no requirement of formal education. I still wonder what I would have achieved if I had not had the negative comments of teachers about my writing. Maybe I would have pursued this dream many years earlier.

This week I am able to spend a free day in the city for the first time in months. A day of writing at the library. My happy place. My inspiration and possibly even my muse. As I set up in my usual spot in The Quad, I glance over and see a sight to behold. An enormous Lego version of the State Library of Bricktoria (State Library of Victoria). It is magnificently impressive. I decide to wait until there is no one else admiring this construction, as I want an unimpeded view. This Lego is garnering a substantial amount of attention.

When the area is clear of people I wander over with my phone. I want to take photos for posterity. As I meander around the display case I realise not only is this build a wonderful model of my beloved library…it is a replica of the library as it was when it also housed the Melbourne Museum. When I was younger, the museum was within the library, and was another favourite place to visit. I loved the dinosaur skeletons, the dioramas, and all the other displays. A brilliant surprise to add to my day.

I am now planning to return to the library next week. I will take my camera with all the lenses to try to capture some additional detail. However, the photos I did take give me so much joy, I wanted to share them and the accompanying story with you. Do you have a favourite library? If you haven’t been for a while, I highly recommend a visit to SLV, while the Lego is exhibited. It is super.
