So…what is your book about?

May 18, 2023May 18, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ 3 Comments

When I started writing my book, I had a very definite idea, or ideas, regarding what is would be about. However, as I write it is morphing and growing into something I did not expect. Apparently this is not only common, it is to be expected. My course, Writing the Narrative Non-Fiction Book, at Faber … Continue reading So…what is your book about?

Freedom and Writing

April 27, 2023April 28, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ 3 Comments

I take for granted that I can sit, whenever I want, and write whatever I like, and then publish it. Of course I censor myself, as far as language and appropriateness are concerned. I am not wanting to offend. But, I am free to have my own opinions and ideas. In many places this is … Continue reading Freedom and Writing

The Elusive Muse

April 20, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ 3 Comments

Stephen King warns of waiting for your muse to present themselves when you are ready to sit down and write. According to him..."he's a hardheaded guy who's not susceptible to a lot of creative fluttering...Your job is to make sure the muse knows where you're going to be every day from nine 'til noon. Or … Continue reading The Elusive Muse

Filling Your Cup

April 13, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ 5 Comments

Writing is a solitary activity. Spending hours with your computer and your thoughts can be both joyous and lonely at the same time. I really enjoy sitting in my memories, untangling the meaning of my existence. However, there is an energy exchange which happens with people. This reciprocity is, for me, an essential element of … Continue reading Filling Your Cup

The Changing Voice of Writing

March 23, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ 5 Comments

Last week Stu and I watched the movie Women Talking. We had a particular interest in the movie, as it was based on the book of the same name, written by Miriam Toews. Miriam Toews was born in Steinbach, Manitoba (Canada) a child of Mennonite parents. Stu grew up in Landmark, Manitoba, a 20 minute … Continue reading The Changing Voice of Writing

This Writing Life

March 9, 2023March 9, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ 2 Comments

Writing a book is an interesting challenge. Some of the difficulties were expected. Some not at all. Overall, I am relishing in the task. It is pushing me out of my comfort zone and demanding of my focus. My brain is enjoying the everyday arduous workout. Being stretched around concepts, being forced to look critically … Continue reading This Writing Life

The Story So Far…

February 17, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ 4 Comments

When I decided to take a year off work to write a book, it felt like a leap of faith. It still does. It's a risk, but one that, so far, I am so happy I took. I am relishing sitting in the space of my memories. Surprised by what is coming up and wants … Continue reading The Story So Far…

2023 A Year of Writing

January 10, 2023April 13, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ Leave a comment

Sitting in my space I have made to write in this year, I am filled with excitement, anxiety and anticipation. This is the year I have carved out to write. Something I have dreamed of doing since I was a child. Having recently turned 50, I have finally decided to shrug off the self-doubt, the … Continue reading 2023 A Year of Writing

I respectfully acknowledge the Wurundjeri people as the traditional owners of the land on which I write and live, and the rich history of storytelling being an important part of the culture. I pay my respects to the elders, past and present, and acknowledge sovereignty of this land was never ceded.

I travelled to the other side of Melbourne today, or ‘the wrong side of the river,’ as my grandfather used to taunt my Williamstown born grandmother. I went to do a workshop with the very knowledgeable Kate, @kmildenhall at Sunshine Library. The session was part of the Brimbank Readers and Writers Festival. As always, listening to Kate speak made me a little bit more clever, and a lot more clear on where I’m going and what I need to do. I wasn't sure what to expect with this one, but had enjoyed Mark's other book, and once I started, I strapped in and enjoyed the ride. Sandra Kuecher is still looking after me ♥ 11 years later. This was my beautiful care package she sent me off to Japan with. Me, my two girls, aged 14 and 9, and a month of adventures awaiting us. Is Suicide a Dirty Word? Symphony Tower Tokyo by Rie Qudan, expertly translated by Jesse Kirkwood, is every language lovers perfect read. A story which looks at language on many levels, including the structure and architecture, the appearance of, and way you read the components or characters, and the way meaning is conveyed through the words themselves. My beautiful friend Maki, from @guesthouse.soi.kyoto , sent me this spectacular 'The Tale of Genji' inspired incense. 'The Tale of Genji' is a novel, over a thousand years old, and is the inspiration for my work in progress. Some local morning inspiration 😍 #wrìterslife #dandenongranges #wallabies #morningwalk #australianwildlife Thanks @katesollywriter for having us at your writing workshop last night, at Carnegie Library. It's always great to listen to you talk. Plus, I love your colour coding. As a fellow ND, it appeals, a lot! Thanks to @aaron.clarkpear for taking this photo and making me look natural, and normal. I hate having my photo taken, but you made it easy 😍 big love, little bro ❤️ #wrìterslife #authorshot #usuallyawkward
