Who Am I?

February 3, 2026February 10, 2026 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ Leave a comment

It's been a while since I've written anything, and I've been mostly absent from social media. I'm not sure I'd call it a mid-life crisis, but I'm definitely middle aged, unless I live to 120 years old. My crisis has presented itself as a recent late diagnosis of ADHD, rolled in with menopause, death in … Continue reading Who Am I?

I respectfully acknowledge the Wurundjeri people as the traditional owners of the land on which I write and live, and the rich history of storytelling being an important part of the culture. I pay my respects to the elders, past and present, and acknowledge sovereignty of this land was never ceded.

Autumn is my favourite time of year. The colours, the weather, the smells, the sounds. I love it all, especially in the hills. #autumn #dandenongranges #fungi #floweringhops #writerlife Yesterday was International Tartan Day. These are my family tartans, some dress, some hunting, and some ancient, for my grandparents', and great grandparents' Black, Fraser, and McDonald. Erosion, suppression, or eradication of a group's culture comes in many forms. My exploration of my Scottish heritage has been minimal, but is on my wishlist to visit and understand. Doing Ancestry DNA revealed I'm 42% Scottish, from Central, North East, the Hebrides and Western Highlands. What a lovely night at the Panton Hill Hotel to launch Leearna Shaw's debut, A Farm in Golden Clouds. Hosted by the hostess with the mostest, Anne Freeman, and attended by lots of writing buddies. Write Squad was well represented, and the room was full of love for Leearna. It's always inspiring to hear a story of perseverance becoming a dream come true. Congratulations, @leearna.shaw.author #afarmingoldenclouds #writesquad #writerlife #booklaunch As a mum and ally, I see you, I support you, and I love you ❤️ Maryanne Wolf is a scholar, a teacher, and an advocate for children and literacy around the world. I heard this quote during her appearance on the excellent new ABC documentary series, The Matter of Facts. Hosted by Hamish Macdonald, the show explores the impact of digital mediums, misinformation and AI on critical thinking, brain development, and democratic processes. We are literally being brainwashed by the algorithm to stop questioning where our facts or news comes from. I can't recommend this series highly enough. I'll be writing a piece about this soon, after being horrified by what the algorithm was feeding my husband. Monday morning vibe ❤️ Chatting with Madeleine Cleary today at Belgrave Library about her book, The Butterfly Women, was fun, interesting, and informative. Madeleine is such a natural, she made my first ‘In Conversation’ a relaxing experience. It was lovely to have Christine Newell and Wifey (Amanda Gambas) in the audience, as well as some MAC writing regulars, Leah and Judy, and my friend Jas, who is the manager at Belgrave, who took a chance on letting me loose on a local audience ❤️ thank you x I love visiting teamLabs in Japan. It's so inspiring and beautiful. I find these videos really helpful when I'm writing and trying to immerse myself in Heian Era Japan. The music, the visuals, and in the space there are also scents, and sometimes water, or moving floors. A spectacular sensory experience, that I highly recommend if you go. So excited to chat with Madeleine Cleary about her brilliant book, The Butterfly Women, at Belgrave Library this Saturday, at 11am. I have a million questions, but will try to condense it down to an hour.
