Local Library Love

November 28, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ 2 Comments

I really love libraries. I love the State Library of Victoria; it's my happy place. I also love my local library, Belgrave Library. They host my writing group, Mountain Ash Chapter, every month, and look after us so well. I love the other libraries in my local area, the Eastern Regional Libraries. I often visit … Continue reading Local Library Love

Big Magic

November 9, 2023November 9, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ 3 Comments

I had an epiphany today. A real, bolt-from-the-blue, body tingling, mind-expanding epiphany. And it was good! Really good. I was listening to Elizabeth Gilbert’s book Big Magic on Audible. Elizabeth wrote Eat, Pray, Love back in 2007. A book which incited in me an inspiration for adventure which hasn’t really dissipated in the fifteen years … Continue reading Big Magic

Raising The Stakes

October 19, 2023October 19, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ Leave a comment

Just moments ago I heard on the news that a person in Antarctica had stabbed a co-worker for spoiling the ending of a book he was reading. The news story was about workplace stress. But I was more interested in the obvious investment the stabber had in his reading material. I wonder what book it … Continue reading Raising The Stakes

But What If No-one Listens

October 11, 2023October 12, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ Leave a comment

With the upcoming referendum in Australia regarding the Voice to Parliament, I have been thinking a lot about voices. Although the polls suggest it is unlikely to pass, I can’t imagine why anyone would vote for someone else’s voice to continue to be unrepresented and unheard. Growing up in Australia I heard few indigenous voices. … Continue reading But What If No-one Listens

American Psycho

October 2, 2023October 2, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ 2 Comments

I grew up near Readings Bookshop in Hawthorn. Receiving a Readings voucher was by far my favourite gift to receive. I would wander the shop, reading blurbs, and take forever to make a decision about how to spend my cherished book money. I have many wonderful memories of Readings, but by far the most vivid … Continue reading American Psycho

The Rise of Banned Books

October 1, 2023February 6, 2025 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ 1 Comment

Indulge me, if you will... Imagine I am a school librarian, in Des Moines, Iowa. I am slowly walking through the stacks, removing titles as I go. The Kite Runner, The Handmaid's Tale, Brave New World, The Colour Purple. You may picture me in a pencil skirt, with a fitted jacket, my hair in a … Continue reading The Rise of Banned Books

Is it ok to not be ok?

September 14, 2023September 14, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ 1 Comment

Here we are again on my least favourite, quippy-acronym day of senseless tokenism. I mean, RUOK Day? We can't even spell it correctly. It might make it too real. A day of corporate yellowness and box ticking, self-congratulatory, fake altruism and empathy. Actually, in fairness, I must concede to the fact RUOK Day has raised … Continue reading Is it ok to not be ok?

We Love Memoirs Day

August 31, 2023August 31, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ Leave a comment

Today, 31st August, is officially We Love Memoirs Day. Personally, I love memoirs everyday. In fact, I love all kinds of books, every day of the year. However, I do particularly love memoirs. Especially if I have recently read other books of fiction by the same author. It's fascinating to see the differences and similarities … Continue reading We Love Memoirs Day

Impostor Syndrome

August 25, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ 2 Comments

It's the beginning of 2021 and Melbourne is in a lull between two COVID lockdowns. I have been writing a blog for six years and decide I would like to improve my writing. I happen across a Reflective Writing Course on a local Facebook group. It is partly funded by a government grant and sounds … Continue reading Impostor Syndrome

At the Foot of the Cherry Tree

August 18, 2023August 25, 2023 ~ Kylie Eklund-Denman ~ Leave a comment

Going to bookshops is one of my favourite things to do. I am sure no-one is surprised by this. Last week I wandered into Dymocks and was immediately drawn to one of the end shelves. The book displayed on the top shelf and the accompanying signage was covered in cherry blossom. Cherry blossom is another … Continue reading At the Foot of the Cherry Tree

I respectfully acknowledge the Wurundjeri people as the traditional owners of the land on which I write and live, and the rich history of storytelling being an important part of the culture. I pay my respects to the elders, past and present, and acknowledge sovereignty of this land was never ceded.

I travelled to the other side of Melbourne today, or ‘the wrong side of the river,’ as my grandfather used to taunt my Williamstown born grandmother. I went to do a workshop with the very knowledgeable Kate, @kmildenhall at Sunshine Library. The session was part of the Brimbank Readers and Writers Festival. As always, listening to Kate speak made me a little bit more clever, and a lot more clear on where I’m going and what I need to do. I wasn't sure what to expect with this one, but had enjoyed Mark's other book, and once I started, I strapped in and enjoyed the ride. Sandra Kuecher is still looking after me ♥ 11 years later. This was my beautiful care package she sent me off to Japan with. Me, my two girls, aged 14 and 9, and a month of adventures awaiting us. Is Suicide a Dirty Word? Symphony Tower Tokyo by Rie Qudan, expertly translated by Jesse Kirkwood, is every language lovers perfect read. A story which looks at language on many levels, including the structure and architecture, the appearance of, and way you read the components or characters, and the way meaning is conveyed through the words themselves. My beautiful friend Maki, from @guesthouse.soi.kyoto , sent me this spectacular 'The Tale of Genji' inspired incense. 'The Tale of Genji' is a novel, over a thousand years old, and is the inspiration for my work in progress. Some local morning inspiration 😍 #wrìterslife #dandenongranges #wallabies #morningwalk #australianwildlife Thanks @katesollywriter for having us at your writing workshop last night, at Carnegie Library. It's always great to listen to you talk. Plus, I love your colour coding. As a fellow ND, it appeals, a lot! Thanks to @aaron.clarkpear for taking this photo and making me look natural, and normal. I hate having my photo taken, but you made it easy 😍 big love, little bro ❤️ #wrìterslife #authorshot #usuallyawkward
